Aghbyurak Reservoir
Ахпюракское водохранилище · Աղբյուրակի ջրամբար
Aghbyurak Reservoir sits on the Hrazdan River within the town of Hrazdan, in Kotayk region. It was put into service in 1953 and covers 1.7 km², holding 5.6 million m³ of water, of which 4.1 million m³ is usable. The Hrazdan and Marmarik rivers feed it.
The reservoir functions as the head and regulating basin for the Argel hydroelectric station, one link in the Sevan-Hrazdan cascade of dams and power plants that channels water from Lake Sevan down the Hrazdan valley. Its dam is a rockfill (stone-fill) structure, 117 meters long and 14.5 meters at its highest point.
Sitting at roughly 1,700 meters above sea level, the reservoir freezes over in winter.
The reservoir lies in Kotayk region at the town of Hrazdan, about 42 km north-northeast of Yerevan (straight-line).
Ice covers the reservoir in winter, so plan differently depending on the season if you want open water.
