Alpide belt, Armenia

Alpide belt

Средиземноморский складчатый пояс · Ալպ-Հիմալայան գեոսինկլինալ

The Alpide belt is a seismic and orogenic (mountain-building) zone that runs along Eurasia's southern margin for more than 15,000 kilometers. It isn't one range but a chain of them: Java and Sumatra at one end, the Indochinese peninsula, the Himalayas and Transhimalayas, the mountains of Iran, the Caucasus, Anatolia, and the Mediterranean, before the chain runs out into the Atlantic.

It's also known as the Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belt, or, in older usage, the Alpine-Persia-Tibet-Burma orogeny. The entry here marks a point of reference for the belt as a whole rather than a single mountain, ridge, or summit.

No marz, town, or locality is tied to this entry. The coordinates on file sit about 2,863 km west-northwest of Yerevan (straight-line), a reference point along a belt that spans continents rather than a single site to visit.
