Ardvi monastery

Монастырь Србанес · Արդվիի Սուրբ Հովհաննես վանք

Ardvi monastery is built around the tombstone of Hovhannes III of Odzun, set before the altar of its northern church. The complex sits at the northwestern edge of Ardvi village and consists of two vaulted churches joined together, a bell tower, and the remains of monastic buildings.

In the 13th century a hall with a large arched opening was added to the church's west facade. In the 17th century a separate bell tower went up to the south of the churches — a cube-shaped lower section topped by a six-column rotunda.

Within the monastery's walled grounds are the ruins of cells and utility buildings. West of the complex lies a medieval cemetery with khachkars (carved cross-stones). Stepanos Tarinyan restored the monastery in the 19th century, and Melikset Kalantaryan renovated it again in 1902. In 2018, Vahe Karapetyan, president of the Tashir charitable foundation, carried out a further restoration of the complex.

Ardvi monastery is in Lori region, on the edge of Ardvi village near Odzun, roughly 94 km north of Yerevan in a straight line.
