Argavand Funerary Tower

Мавзолей Пир-Хусейна · Կարա-Կոյունլուների դամբարան

The Argavand Funerary Tower is a mausoleum raised in 1413 by Pir Husayn, an emir of the Kara Koyunlu dynasty, most likely to mark his father Saad's grave. Simple premise: a son, a tomb, a date. Pir Husayn's family were Turkoman rulers who held Armenia, most of Iran, and other territories through the 15th century — a dynasty most people today have never heard of, once holding ground right where Yerevan now sprawls.

The structure is thought to have served as a dynastic cemetery for Saad's line, not a one-off tomb for a single man. Whether that reading holds up is a question for archaeologists. What's settled is the year and the name behind it, which is more than most 15th-century structures in this region can offer.

Condition on site, how close you can get, whether it's fenced or open — none of that is documented here. Worth confirming locally before you make the trip out.

Argavand is a village in Ararat province, roughly 6 km southwest of central Yerevan as the crow flies, right against the capital's built-up edge.
