Argmaghan
Армаган · Արմաղան
Argmaghan is a volcanic peak reaching 2,829 m, set on the border between the Geghama and Vardenis mountain ranges in Gegharkunik region, southwest of Lake Sevan and north of the Argichi river valley. It lies within the territory of the Verin Getashen community.
The summit holds a volcanic crater 400 m across and 50 m deep, partly filled by a small lake about 50 m in diameter and 1.5 m deep, ringed by alpine plants.
In 2009, a domed church of hewn basalt was built on the summit, on the site of an older chapel.
Local tradition holds that peris (celestial fairies) sometimes descend to drink from the lake, and that the mountaintop wraps itself in fog at those moments so the fairies stay unseen.
Argmaghan is in Gegharkunik region, roughly 61 km east of Yerevan in a straight line. It also lies about 20 km from the town of Martuni, within Verin Getashen community land.
