Armenian ParaAthletics Federation

The Armenian ParaAthletics Federation says its main goal is developing disability sports in Armenia. It frames its Paralympic athletes as carrying a second mission: opening a path for the next generation of people with disabilities.

The federation's own material profiles individual athletes rather than facilities. It highlights Hayk Abgaryan, who lost part of his leg below the knee in a car accident at age 9 or 10 and later became a master of sport (a Soviet-era athletic rank) in winter Paralympic disciplines. He has raced wheelchair marathons in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Paris and Toronto, served as a volunteer in the Armenian Armed Forces from 1997 to 1999, and enrolled at the Yerevan State University of Physical Culture in 2020.

Alongside teammate Stas Nazarian, 42, a master of sport with more than 25 years in Paralympic sport, Abgaryan trained at the Tsaghkadzor sports base. The two reportedly fixed up an abandoned gym there themselves and adapted it for training, ahead of ranking competitions in Paris and the Tokyo Paralympic Games.
