Arshakuni Buriap Vryptat at aghtsk 4th century
усыпальница Аршакидов · Արշակունիների դամբարան
The Arshakuni Mausoleum is a 4th-century tomb that once held the remains of both pagan and Christian kings of the Arshakuni (Arsacid) dynasty of Armenia. It sits along a gorge above the Amberd River, at the center of Aghtsk village, also known as Dzorap, in Aragatsotn province.
A basilica church was built beside the tomb in the 5th century and rebuilt in the 19th century, so the complex standing today combines both periods.
About 100 meters north of the basilica and tomb, a shrine marks a path down into the gorge. Along that path are caves dating from the 16th to 18th centuries — some fitted with doors, used as shelter during invasions.
The site is in Aragatsotn province, in Aghtsk (Dzorap) village near Byurakan, ~27 km northwest of Yerevan (straight-line).
