Cascade

Каскад · Կասկադ

The Cascade is a multi-level staircase complex built into the slope north of Yerevan's center — terraces, fountains, sculpture and exhibition halls stacked one above the other. It's not a single monument so much as a piece of urban architecture: a stone spine climbing the hillside, meant to be walked up and looked back down from.

It exists because of Alexander Tamanyan's master plan for Yerevan. Tamanyan laid out a city axis meant to tie the center to the elevated Kanaker-Zeytun district above it, and the Cascade is the physical link — the point where flat city grid gives way to hillside and stairs take over from streets.

Each terrace opens views back over the city as you climb, and the structure houses exhibition space along the way, so it functions as gallery and public stair at once. Details on current exhibitions and access are best checked locally.

The Cascade sits in Yerevan itself, at the edge of the city center where the flat downtown grid meets the rising ground toward the Kanaker-Zeytun district to the north.
