Cathedral of Avan, Yerevan, Armenia

Cathedral of Avan

Аванский храм · Եկեղեցի Սբ. Աստվածածին (Կաթողիկե, Ծիրանավոր)

The Cathedral of Avan dates to the late 6th century, making it the oldest church still standing inside Yerevan's city limits. Only part of the structure survives today.

It's built as a tetraconch — a church plan with four rounded apses arranged around a central space — and is recorded as the earliest dated example of that form. Locally it's also known as Katoghike Tsiranavor, and some sources link it to the name Surb Hovhannes (St. Hovhannes).

The church stands in the Avan district on Yerevan's north side, about 7 km northeast of the city center (straight-line).
