Devil's Bridge
Карстовая пещера под мостом · Սատանայի կամուրջ
Devil's Bridge crosses the Vorotan gorge at its deepest point, where the canyon walls fall 700-800 metres from rim to river. Nature made this, not engineers. The arch itself is travertine — about 30 metres long, 50-60 metres across at its widest, and roughly 50 metres above the water below. It sits 2.5 km east of Tatev village, in Syunik.
Travertine forms when mineral-rich water deposits calcium carbonate as it flows or evaporates, building up in layers that harden into stone. That's the material behind the bridge's pale, sculpted surface — centuries of water doing work no engineer had to.
If you're already in Tatev, this is a short detour into the gorge rather than a trip of its own. Stand on the bridge and the scale becomes real. Below: open canyon air, all the way down to the Vorotan.
The bridge is in Syunik region, about 2.5 km east of Tatev village, roughly 170 km southeast of Yerevan as a straight line.
Conditions in the gorge shift with the seasons — best to check locally before heading down.
