Didikond

Дидиконд · Դիդիկոնդ

Didikond is an archaeological hill on the east side of Oshakan village, in Aragatsotn, layered with over two thousand years of settlement. Its slopes hold the remains of a habitation site and burial fields dating to the 2nd and 1st millennia BC, while the summit preserves a fortress built in the late Urartian period.

That fortress had a square layout, covered about a quarter of a hectare, and was ringed by a wall 2.65 meters thick. The Amatuni family renovated it in the 4th and 5th centuries AD, and afterward an ordinary settlement spread over a wider area on the same spot. Locals call the hill simply "D."

Excavations starting in 1971 turned up pottery, nine carved stone fragments, and other traces of material culture. In Western Armenian transliteration the name appears as Ditikond.

Didikond is in Aragatsotn region, on the eastern edge of Oshakan village near Ashtarak, roughly 19 km west-northwest of Yerevan in a straight line.
