Dvin
Двин · Դվին
Little remains today to advertise it, but Dvin's ruins sit on ground that saw serious warfare in the early medieval period. In the summer of 927, a Byzantine army laid siege to the city while it was under the control of the Sajid dynasty — a Muslim emirate that held sway over parts of Armenia at the time. The siege failed: the Byzantines were driven off with heavy losses, one episode in the long tug-of-war over control of the Ararat plain and its cities.
That single recorded clash is a reminder of how contested this stretch of land once was, caught between Byzantine, Arab, and local Armenian power for centuries. Visiting today means engaging with an archaeological landscape rather than a restored monument — a site for those interested in piecing together the region's layered history rather than expecting dramatic standing ruins.
Dvin lies on the Ararat plain south of Yerevan. It's reachable by road from the capital as part of a day trip through the surrounding lowland towns and villages of the region.
As an open-air archaeological site, it's most comfortably visited in spring through autumn, avoiding the harshest winter weather on the plain.
