Dzhardzharis Church

церковь Дерек · Դերեկի եկեղեցի

Dzhardzharis Church is one of Armenia's largest single-nave churches from the early medieval period. It stands at the northern edge of Derek village, on the southern slope of the Pambak mountain range, built on a stepped stone foundation of gray dressed tuff.

Only the north wall survives in full, along with more than half of the east wall.

The prayer hall ends to the east in an apse that's horseshoe-shaped inside and five-sided outside. It has no window. In its place is a carved equal-armed cross set inside a circle. Inside, three pairs of pilasters carry vaulted arches that divide the hall into four sections; the eastern arches are pointed and two-centered, the rest horseshoe-shaped.

The church sits in Aragatsotn region, on the north edge of Derek village, with Aparan as the nearest town on record — roughly 60 km north-northwest of Yerevan in a straight line.
