Erivan Fortress

Эриванская крепость · Երևանի բերդ

Erivan Fortress was Yerevan's defensive stronghold on the left bank of the Hrazdan River, mentioned in Armenian texts as far back as the 7th century and known to have existed as a built-up fortress by the 16th century. It wasn't a single static structure — it grew over the centuries from a smaller early-medieval fort into a larger fortified complex.

Historians place the earliest version of the fortress in the Kond quarter, one of Yerevan's oldest neighborhoods. As it expanded, it eventually covered the ground where the Ararat wine factory stands today, right along the gorge that splits the city.

The fortress didn't survive Yerevan's 20th-century transformation. It was torn down in the 1930s as part of the Soviet-era rebuilding of the city, and today only fragments of its walls and foundations are left — scattered remnants rather than a site you can walk through.

The fortress site sits inside present-day Yerevan, on the left bank of the Hrazdan gorge near the Kond quarter and the grounds of the Ararat wine factory — this is a city location, not a separate destination outside town.
