Ertij Fort, Vayots Dzor, Armenia

Ertij Fort

крепость Эртидж · Էրթիջի ամրոց

Ertij Fort dates to the 13th century, built on a hill next to the village of Arpi in Vayots Dzor. Armenian sources place its construction across the 12th to 14th centuries.

Inside the walls, what remains includes a reservoir, foundations of former dwellings, and broken khachkars (carved cross-stones). The base of the perimeter wall has also survived.

Down in the gorge cut by the Arpa River, close to the fort, is the cave shrine of Jrovank.

The fort sits in Vayots Dzor province, on a hill beside the village of Arpi, roughly 81 km southeast of Yerevan as the crow flies.
