Gndevank

Гндеванк · Գնդեվանք

Gndevank is a 10th-century monastery in the Vayots Dzor region, built in 936 in the canyon of the Arpa river, along the road that connects Vayk and Jermuk.

Construction was carried out at the initiative of Princess Sophia, wife of Smbat, prince of Syunik. She was the daughter of Grigor-Derenik Artsruni, senior prince of Vaspurakan, and sister of King Gagik. In the medieval period the monastery was regarded as one of Armenia's cultural centers and it remains one of the country's oldest surviving monastic complexes. The church was enclosed by a fortress wall.

Gndevank stands in the Vayots Dzor region near Jermuk, roughly 105 km east-southeast of Yerevan (straight-line).
