Halavar
Алавар · Հալավար
Halavar reservoir sits on the Halavar river in Aragatsotn region, about 8 km east of Tsaghkahovit, at roughly 2,030 meters. It went into service in 1981. The water surface covers 0.46 square kilometers, averages 8 meters deep, and holds up to 5.5 million cubic meters. Flow control here runs on a seasonal cycle rather than year-round.
The dam is earthen, built with a clay core, running 255 meters long and reaching up to 32 meters high. Water is released through a metal pipeline. Because the irrigated fields sit higher than the reservoir itself, a pump station was built next to the dam to lift water up to them.
The reservoir basin has unfavorable geological conditions, and as a result it loses a significant amount of water.
Halavar reservoir lies in Aragatsotn region, near the town of Aparan, about ~55 km north-northwest of Yerevan (straight-line).
Flow regulation at the reservoir is seasonal, so the water level changes through the year.
