Kakavaberd (Kaqavaberd)

Какаваберд · Կաքավաբերդ

Kakavaberd — also recorded as Geghi Berd, Keghi Berd, and Kegh — is a medieval fortress built on a ridge over the Azat River gorge, inside Khosrov Forest State Reserve in Ararat Province. Its position, set 1,516 meters above sea level and overlooking the gorge below, made it a natural point for controlling passage through this stretch of the reserve.

The three surviving names for the site suggest it stayed known and referenced over a long span, even though little of its documented history has survived beyond that.

The fortress is in Ararat Province, near Garni, about 33 km east-southeast of Yerevan as the crow flies.
