Капанский краеведческий музей · Կապանի երկրագիտական թանգարան
Kapan is a town in southeast Armenia, serving as capital of Syunik Province. It sits in the Voghji River valley on the northern slopes of Mount Khustup, near the border with Azerbaijan. From 987 to 1170 it was the capital of the Armenian Kingdom of Syunik.
Its population has been shrinking: 45,711 in 2001, 43,190 in 2011, and around 32,780 by the 2022 census. Despite the decline, Kapan remains the largest town in Syunik Province and in southern Armenia overall.
The town's local lore museum, Կապանի երկրագիտական թանգարան ("Kapan local-lore museum"), documents the area's history and geography.
Kapan lies in Syunik Province, roughly 196 km east-southeast of Yerevan in a straight line.
