Kayan Fortress
Каянберд · Կայանբերդ
Kayan Fortress was once a monastery of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Today it goes by the name fortress — a spur of rock rising between the villages of Haghpat and Akner, on the right side of the road that runs north toward Georgia.
When the site shifted from religious to defensive use isn't recorded in the available sources. Neither is much about its walls, its layout, or what condition it's in now.
That gap matters if you're planning to go. Check locally on access and the state of the ruins before setting out. The promontory is easy enough to point to on a map; what's actually left to see up close is another question.
Kayan Fortress is in Lori region, between the villages of Haghpat and Akner, beside the road toward the Georgian border. In a straight line it's roughly 100 km north-northeast of Yerevan — actual road distance will run longer.
