Kecharis Monastery

Монастырский комплекс Кечарис · Կեչառիս վանքային համալիր

Kecharis Monastery was a major religious and educational center in Armenia during the 12th and 13th centuries, and its four churches, two chapels, and gavit (columned entrance hall) still stand today in the northwest part of Tsaghkadzor. A Pahlavuni prince founded the complex in the 11th century, in what was then the Varazhnunik gavar (district) of the Ayrarat province; by the mid-13th century it had passed to the Proshian family.

The grounds also hold an old cemetery with khachkars (carved cross-stones) dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The monastery has been fully restored and is visible from Tsaghkadzor's ski slopes.

Kecharis Monastery is in Kotayk region, in the northwest part of Tsaghkadzor, about 43 km north-northeast of Yerevan (straight-line).
