Komitas statue
Памятник Комитасу · Կոմիտասի արձան
This monument, set up in 1988, marks the park in front of the conservatory that carries Komitas's name in central Yerevan. It's listed among the historical and cultural monuments of the city's Kentron district.
The man it depicts, born Soghomon Soghomonian, worked as an Ottoman-Armenian priest before becoming a musicologist, composer, arranger, singer, and choirmaster. He's credited as the founder of the Armenian national school of music and counted among the early figures of ethnomusicology, the study of music within its cultural context.
The statue sits in Yerevan's Kentron district, about 1 km north-northeast of the city center (straight-line).
