Kotuts
Котуц · Կոտուց
Kotuts is a 2,061.5-meter summit in the highlands of central Ararat region, part of a cluster of peaks that share its name. Older records list several names for the same mountain — Kotuts sar (mountain), Ketuzdagh, Ketuzsar, Ketus, Kyutuzdagh — a pile-up that comes from generations of different communities mapping the same ridge.
The flanks are cut by short ravines and covered in dry-tolerant scrub and grasses. Slopes run steep, 35 to 55 degrees, with only thin cover over rock and soil. Only the northeast face eases off. Even there, it's no easy walk.
The summit itself sits inside Khosrov Forest State Reserve. On the southeastern slope stand the ruins of Tapi berd (fortress). No record survives of who built it or when — only its position above the ravines remains, with nothing documented about its original purpose.
Kotuts rises in the mountainous interior of Ararat region, roughly 2 km northwest of Urtsadzor village. No trailhead or route details are documented, so it's worth checking access locally, particularly given the summit's location inside Khosrov Forest State Reserve.
Given how steep and thinly vegetated the slopes are, drier months likely make for a safer approach than winter or wet weather, though this isn't something documented — check reserve access rules before heading up regardless of season.
