Lake Akna

Акна · Ակնա

Lake Akna is Armenia's lowest-lying lake, sitting on the flat, semi-desert stretch of the Ararat plain west of Etchmiadzin, in the Armavir region. No river feeds it. Instead the water rises from underground — an unusual setup for a lake in Armenia — in a basin some sources describe as a leftover section of the Araks river's old channel.

Its size is hard to pin down. Armenian, Russian and English sources give the surface area anywhere from 50 to 60 hectares, shrinking to around 7 hectares by late summer as evaporation takes over in this dry stretch of the plain. Depth figures vary too, from 2 meters up to 9.4-9.5 meters at the deepest point, inside a funnel-shaped basin that narrows toward the center.

The Metsamor river begins here, at the lake's outflow. It's used exclusively for irrigation, watering fields across the Ararat plain. That makes Akna less a scenic destination than a working piece of the region's water system — worth a stop if you're already headed toward Etchmiadzin.

Lake Akna lies in the Armavir region, on the Ararat plain a short distance west of Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin), roughly 29 kilometers west-southwest of Yerevan as the crow flies.

The lake's extent shifts with evaporation rather than rainfall runoff — expect more open water in cooler months and a much smaller pool by late summer, when the dry plain climate pulls it toward its minimum size.
