Lake Sevan, Gegharkunik, Armenia

Lake Sevan

Севан · Սևանա լիճ

Lake Sevan is Armenia's largest body of water and the biggest lake in the Caucasus — a freshwater expanse in Gegharkunik province (the region built around the lake), sitting at roughly 1,900 meters above sea level. Only Lake Titicaca in South America holds a higher spot among the world's large freshwater lakes.

That altitude drives the hydrology. Twenty-eight rivers and streams feed into Sevan. Just 10% of that inflow leaves again, carried off by the Hrazdan River; the other 90% evaporates straight off the surface, a steady loss that shapes the lake's level year to year.

The town of Sevan sits on the lake's edge and works as the natural base for anyone visiting — the two share a name for good reason.

Lake Sevan lies in Gegharkunik province, roughly 60 km northeast of Yerevan in a straight line, with the town of Sevan on its shore.
