Makaravank

Макараванк · Մակարավանք

Makaravank is a church complex built between the 10th and 13th centuries on the slope of Paitatap Mountain, near the village of Achajur in Tavush province. Armenian sources place it among a small group of monasteries — Aghtamar, Bgheno-Noravank, Gandzasar — noted for the originality and variety of their carved ornament, and it holds a notable place in Armenian architecture on that basis.

The monastery is well preserved and remains an active site of worship today.

Makaravank sits in Tavush province, near the town of Ijevan, on the slope of Paitatap Mountain close to the village of Achajur — about 103 km north-northeast of Yerevan as the crow flies.
