Makenyants Monastery

Монастырь Макеняц · Մաքենյաց վանք

Makenyants Monastery is a medieval Armenian monastic complex dating from the 9th to 13th centuries, standing by the village of Makenis in Gegharkunik province. It served as one of the region's centers of religious life and education during that span.

Its main church, Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), was built in 851 under Prince Grigor Supan II, son of Princess Mariam. Mariam also founded Kotavank in nearby Nerkin Getashen.

The monastery lies in Gegharkunik province near the town of Artsvanist, close to Makenis village and about 5 km south of Lake Sevan — roughly 94 km east of Yerevan in a straight line.
