Makravank Monastery

Макраванк · Մաքրավանք

Makravank is a monastic complex in the village of Makravan, Kotayk province, built around the 13th-century church of Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God). The church follows a domed-hall plan, with a paired set of interior piers and two-story chambers flanking the west end; a circular tambour (drum beneath the dome) carries a conical cupola above.

A single-nave church stands on the south side of the main building. To the west, only the foundation walls remain of what was once a gavit (entry hall), laid out on a nearly square plan. Khachkars (carved cross-stones) with ornamental carving surround the main church.

The complex also includes a half-ruined chapel from the 11th century, roughly two hundred years older than the main church. East of the church lies a small medieval cemetery marked by decorated khachkars.

Makravank sits in Kotayk province, near the village of Makravan, roughly 43 km north-northeast of Yerevan as the crow flies.
