Metsamor

Metsamor is an archaeological site on the Ararat Plain, holding the remains of settlements and structures built up over the Chalcolithic, Bronze, and Early Iron Ages. Armenian sources date a fortress-city here to the 5th millennium BC.

Excavations have uncovered copper-smelting and bronze-smelting complexes, a sanctuary, tombs, and a structure archaeologists believe served as an observatory. Together these layers span several thousand years of continuous use on the same ground.

The site sits in Armavir region near Vagharshapat, about 28 km west-southwest of Yerevan in a straight line.
