Mount Aragats
Арагац · Արագած
Mount Aragats is Armenia's highest peak: a four-peaked volcanic massif whose northern summit reaches 4,090 meters, the highest point in the Lesser Caucasus and in the country itself.
Four peaks, one massif.
The whole thing is enormous by Armenian standards — nearly 40 km across east to west, up to 35 km north to south, covering close to 4,000 square kilometers between the Ararat and Shirak plains, with the Akhuryan and Kasagh rivers marking its edges. Lower slopes carry forest; higher up, that gives way to open meadow. Three neighboring peaks frame it: Shara to the north, Ara to the east, Mets Arteni to the southwest, each reading as a distinct ridge once you're up on Aragats itself.
Historically the mountain sat at the junction of three gavars (historical Armenian districts) within Greater Armenia — Aragatsotn, Shirak, and Nig. Today it straddles the modern border between Aragatsotn and Shirak provinces.
Aragats rises in Aragatsotn province, roughly 46 km northwest of Yerevan in a straight line. There's no single base town for the massif, and since the four summits are reached by different routes, approach details are best checked locally before you go.
At 4,090 meters, snow can linger on the upper slopes well after it's melted elsewhere in Armenia, and weather above the meadow line can turn quickly even in summer — worth checking conditions before heading up.
