Saint Gevorg Church of Mughni

Церковь Святого Геворга в Мугни · Մուղնու Սուրբ Գևորգ եկեղեցի

Mughni church, better known locally as Saint Gevork Monastery, dates to the 14th century. It was once a major pilgrimage site and the seat of an archbishop, drawing worshippers from around Aragatsotn to this village just north of Ashtarak.

The church you see today isn't entirely original. Its dome was rebuilt in the 1660s; what happened to the earlier one isn't recorded.

Mughni itself has one small historical footnote: before the Russian conquest of the region, it stood as the southernmost point of the old Aparan district.

Mughni lies in Aragatsotn province, just north of Ashtarak town, about 19 km northwest of Yerevan in a straight line. Specific road directions are best checked locally.
