The National Gallery of Armenia fills 56 exhibition halls on Republic Square in Yerevan, and it's the largest fine arts museum in the country. It dates back to 1921.

The collection runs wide. Aivazovsky and Saryan hang alongside Donatello, Tintoretto, Rubens, Courbet, and Rodin. Kandinsky, Chagall, and Arshile Gorky carry things into the 20th century.

A quieter section holds something rarer: fragments of medieval church frescoes, salvaged from sites including Aruch, Haghpat, Akhtala, Tatev, and Ani, along with Armenian cultural centers abroad. Next to them sits an archive of roughly 200,000 items — photographs, letters, notebooks, and personal belongings tied to Armenian and international artists.

The gallery is closed Mondays. Tuesday through Sunday, it opens 11:00 to 18:00.
