Ptghnavank

Птгнаванк · Պտղնիի տաճար

Ptghnavank is a domed-hall church — a design with a domed square set over a rectangular hall — in the village of Ptghni, Kotayk province, built at the turn of the 7th century, in the last years of the 500s or the first years of the 600s. It ranks among the earliest and finest examples of that architectural type.

The building stands only in part today. What remains is the north wall, the eastern section of the south wall, and the arch that once carried the dome on the east side. The full structure measured 15.7 by 30.4 meters, with an inner prayer hall of roughly 10.3 by 23.8 meters.

Ptghnavank is in Kotayk region, in the village of Ptghni near the town of Abovyan, about 11 km northeast of Yerevan as the crow flies.
