Saint Hovhannes church

Церковь Святого Ованеса · Սուրբ Հովհաննես

Saint Hovhannes church sits in Kond, Yerevan's old hillside quarter, on ground once occupied by a medieval church destroyed in the 1689 earthquake. A wealthy Yerevan resident, Melik Aghamal, funded its rebuilding in 1710, and the church has stayed in active use since.

It follows the three-nave basilica plan common to earlier medieval churches: a rectangular hall for prayer, a main altar set on the eastern end, and sacristies attached alongside it.

The church stands in the Kond district of Yerevan, roughly 1 km northwest of the city center (straight-line).
