Saint Nshan
Святой Ншан · Սուրբ Նշան եկեղեցի
Saint Nshan is a church in Gyumri, in Armenia's Shirak region, built between 1859 and 1864 with funds bequeathed by Prince Ghahraman Erkaynabazuk Arghutyan and gathered through public donation.
The church wasn't always called Saint Nshan. It first went up on the site of an older wooden chapel that held an icon of the Mother of God's Seven Wounds, and so it was originally named Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God). Locals later came to call it Yot Verk (Seven Wounds), after that icon. Once the new church funded by Erkaynabazuk's donations was built, it took on the name Saint Nshan, while the icon itself moved to the separate, newly built Surb Yot Verk church.
Saint Nshan stands in the town of Gyumri, in Shirak region, roughly 89 km northwest of Yerevan as the crow flies.
