Sanahin Monastery

Санаин · Սանահինի վանք

Sanahin Monastery is a 10th-century monastic complex in Lori province that once ran a scriptorium, a library, and a jemaran (medieval seminary and academy). That combination is why it carries UNESCO World Heritage status today.

The complex took shape over the 10th to 13th centuries. Scribes worked here, copying manuscripts by hand in the scriptorium. A library held those texts. The jemaran trained students beyond basic religious instruction — closer to a higher school than a parish institution.

Sanahin sits on a raised plateau above the right bank of the Debed river, in what is now the Sanahin district of Alaverdi. It is listed jointly with Haghpat Monastery as a single UNESCO World Heritage Site, the two together recognized for their role in Armenian religious and intellectual life of the period.

Sanahin lies in Lori province, in the Sanahin district of the town of Alaverdi, roughly 102 km north of Yerevan in a straight line.
