Sardarapat Memorial
Мемориальный комплекс «Сардарапат» · Սարդարապատի հերոսամարտի հուշահամալիր
Sardarapat Memorial is a monument and museum complex built on the site of the 1918 Battle of Sardarabad, where Armenian forces and volunteer fighters stopped the advancing Ottoman regular army. It stands near the village of Araks in Armavir province.
The complex doubles as Armenia's national museum of ethnography and the history of the liberation struggle. It opened in May 1968, timed to the 50th anniversary of the battle's outcome.
The name comes from the town itself: in 1918, present-day Armavir was called Sardarapat, and the memorial keeps that name in place of the modern one.
The memorial sits in Armavir province, near the village of Araks and about 11 km southwest of Armavir town. It's roughly 49 km west of Yerevan as the crow flies.
