Shoghakat Church stands on the north side of Vagharshapat, on ground once used for the royal wine-presses. Tradition holds it marks the spot where Saint Marianne, one of the Hripsimian virgins, was martyred.

Prince Aghamal Sorotetsi built the church in 1694, during the tenure of Catholicos (head of the Armenian Apostolic Church) Nahabed I.

It now stands among Etchmiadzin's cluster of historic churches, included in UNESCO's World Heritage listing for the site.

Shoghakat Church is in Vagharshapat, Armavir province, about 18 km west of Yerevan as the crow flies.
