Small Bovakar

Бовакар · Բովաքար

Small Bovakar, also called Khalab, Khalabdagh, or Halab, tops out at 2,986 meters as the highest point of the Halab mountain range in Lori region. The summit is flat like a table, with slopes strewn with rock piles and covered in subalpine and alpine plants. Forests grow on the northern side.

The rock here is Eocene-era volcanic-sedimentary material cut through by granodiorite intrusions, and the peak sits on a syncline (a downward-folded rock structure). The Alarex stream, a right tributary of the Debed river, starts on its eastern slope.

Small Bovakar rises in Lori region, about 6 km north of the village of Margahovit, and lies roughly 70 km north-northeast of Yerevan in a straight line.

The alpine and subalpine vegetation covering the slopes points to a summer and early autumn climbing window, once snow clears from the higher ground.
