Stepan Shahumyan monument

Памятник Степану Шаумяну · Ստեփան Շահումյանի արձան

Yerevan's first officially installed monument stands on Shahumyan Square, unveiled in 1931. It honors Stepan Shahumyan (1878–1918) — a communist party figure, Marxist theorist, sociologist and journalist active in the Soviet and international labor movement — and was made by sculptor S. D. Merkurov and architect I. V. Zholtovsky.

That first-monument status is why it still gets attention nearly a century on. It's now listed among the protected historical-cultural monuments of Yerevan's Kentron district, a formal recognition of a piece that predates almost every other public statue in the city.

The monument sits in Yerevan itself, in Kentron district on Shahumyan Square — effectively at the city's center (~0 km west-southwest of Yerevan, straight-line).
