Symphony of Stones
Симфония камней · Քարերի սիմֆոնիա
Symphony of Stones is a basalt cliff in the Azat river gorge near Garni, Kotayk region, and locals call it the Basalt Organ. The name isn't a stretch. Column after column of rock, split by columnar jointing, stand shoulder to shoulder like pipes on an organ face.
The formation sits where the Azat meets its tributary, the Goght, just outside Garni village. Basalt commonly splits into tight, vertical shafts as lava cools and contracts, and this cliff shows that pattern at scale. Erosion has since cut through the rock to expose the columns in cross-section, which is what gives the wall its fluted, organ-pipe texture.
The site carries official protection. Armenia lists it among its natural monuments, catalogued as KT-GE037. That status shields it from quarrying and building, and marks it out as geologically significant rather than just a striking view.
The formation lies in Kotayk region, in the Azat gorge just outside Garni village, roughly 21 km east-southeast of Yerevan in a straight line. Access is via Garni; road conditions and transport options beyond that are best checked locally.
