Tegher

Монастырь Тегер · Տեղերի վանք

Tegher Monastery went up in the early 1200s on the southeastern slope of Mount Aragats, one of three monasteries — alongside Saghmosavank and Hovhannavank — credited to the architect Aghbayrik, a vardapet (senior priest-scholar title in the Armenian Church). Princess Khatun commissioned it; she was married to Prince Vache I Vachutian, who had bought the Aragatsotn district from the Zakarian brothers.

The monastery stood through the Mongol incursions of the 13th century without major damage. It's a working church today, under the Aragatsotn diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Tegher lies in Aragatsotn region, near the village of Byurakan, roughly 30 km northwest of Yerevan in a straight line.
