Vahramashen Church

Vahramashen Church is the church Prince Vahram Pahlavuni of the Pahlavuni family had built as part of the Amberd fortress complex, on the slopes of Mount Aragats. An inscription on the lintel of the north portal dates its completion to 1026.

You'll also hear it called Surp Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) or simply the Church of Amberd, after the fortress it stands beside.

It sits in Aragatsotn province, along a wall on the promontory above the Arkashian River canyon, next to the Amberd fortress itself.

The church is in Aragatsotn region, near the town of Byurakan, on the slopes of Mount Aragats — about 34 km northwest of Yerevan in a straight line.
