Achqasar
Ачкасар · Աչքասար
Achqasar is a 3,197 m mountain on the border of Lori and Shirak regions, near the Georgian frontier, and it's the highest peak of the Javakheti mountain range within the Lesser Caucasus system.
It formed as a lava cone during the Anthropogene (Quaternary) period, built from andesite-dacite rock. Its slopes are steep, and the upper reaches are covered in rock screes rather than soil or plant cover.
Older Armenian sources also record the mountain under other names — Akhchala, Akchala, Legli, Leyli — though Achqasar is the name in current use.
Achqasar sits in Shirak region on the border with Lori region, close to the Georgian frontier, about 10 km east of the village of Saragyugh. It's roughly 118 km north-northwest of Yerevan, straight-line.
