Арацо · Արածո

Aratso Canyon (Արածո in Armenian) slices a 7-km line into the southeastern flank of the Urts mountain range, in Ararat province. Its walls drop anywhere from 100 to 400 meters — a swing of 300 meters within one gorge — while the floor below narrows to as little as 10 meters and opens out to 80 in other stretches.

The slopes are bare, rocky, and steep, shaped by the Aratso River that runs the length of the canyon. Karst action has opened caves and cavities along the walls, though little else is documented about them.

Aratso Canyon sits in Ararat province, on the Urts range, roughly 60 km southeast of Yerevan as the crow flies. No specific access road or trailhead is confirmed here — best to check locally for the current approach to the gorge.

The bare slopes give no shade, so summer visits are easier earlier in the day before the heat sets in. Rock underfoot is likely harder to manage after rain — worth checking ground conditions before heading in.
