Arjatkhelni Hazel Sanctuary

Лещины Арджатхлени · Արջատխլենու արգելավայր

Arjatkhelni Hazel Sanctuary is a protected natural area in Tavush region, set up to shelter stands of wild hazel growing on the northern slopes of the Ijevan mountain range. It sits in the Khachaghbyur river basin, near the village of Getahovit, at elevations between 1,500 and 1,800 meters.

The sanctuary's whole reason for being is the hazel itself — not the cultivated orchard kind, but wild groves that have held on in this pocket of the Ijevan range. At this altitude the terrain shifts fast: forest gives way to open slope, and the Khachaghbyur river cuts through the basin below, feeding the ecosystem that keeps the hazel stands going.

There's no visitor infrastructure documented here, and no marked trail network to speak of. This is a conservation zone first, a hiking destination second — worth knowing before you plan a visit around it.

The sanctuary lies in Tavush region, near Ijevan town and the village of Getahovit, roughly 90 km northeast of Yerevan as the crow flies. Road access and trailheads are best confirmed locally before setting out.

At 1,500-1,800 m, snow lingers into spring and can arrive early in autumn, so the warmer months between late spring and early autumn are the more reliable window for a visit.
