Armavir
Армавир · Արմավիր
Armavir served as a major trading city and the seat of power for the Orontid dynasty, ruling Armenia before the Artaxiad era. The site marks one of the country's oldest layers of settlement, predating most of what visitors associate with ancient Armenian history.
The ruins sit on the Ararat plain, about a kilometer west of the modern village that carries the same name. Nearby villages — Armavir, Haykavan, Jrashen, and Nor Armavir — ring the site, all part of Armavir region today.
The ruins lie in Armavir region, just west of the modern village of Armavir, roughly 42 km west-southwest of Yerevan in a straight line.
