Baghaberd Fortress, Syunik, Armenia

Baghaberd Fortress

Багаберд · Բաղաբերդ

Baghaberd sat in the old Dzork district of historical Syunik, part of Greater Armenia, and earned a reputation as one of the province's toughest fortresses to crack. Military use here goes back to the 4th century.

Its real strategic weight came later, between 970 and 1170, when the Kingdom of Syunik ruled from Kapan. Baghaberd formed the main link in the defensive network protecting that capital — not a border outpost, but a core piece of the kingdom's security.

The site now falls within the territory of Andokavan village in Syunik region. What remains of the walls and layout is best checked with locals or the region's tourism office before visiting, since condition and access aren't documented here.

Baghaberd lies in Syunik region near Kapan, within the territory of Andokavan village — roughly 180 km southeast of Yerevan as the crow flies.
