David of Sasun, Yerevan, Armenia

David of Sasun

Давид Сасунский · Սասունցի Դավիթ

David of Sasun is a copper equestrian statue of the hero from the Armenian epic "Daredevils of Sasun" (Sasna Tsrer, an 8th-10th century oral epic). Sculptor Yervand Kochar made it in 1959.

The rider stands on a base of basalt blocks arranged to look like natural rock. The whole thing sits in the middle of a round reflecting pool, in the square in front of Yerevan's central railway station.

~2 km south of Yerevan (straight-line); the statue stands in the square fronting Yerevan's central railway station, within the city itself.
