Gandzakar Sanctuary

Гандзакарский заказник · Գանձաքարի արգելավայր

Gandzakar Sanctuary is a 6,813-hectare forest reserve on the western slopes of the Varag mountains in Tavush region. It lies on the right bank of the Aghstev river, within the basin of the river's Paytajur tributary, east of the village that gives it its name.

Founded in 1971, for one reason: to protect the forest animals of this stretch of the Aghstev basin.

Elevation inside the reserve runs from 900 meters to 2,100 meters above sea level — over a kilometer of vertical rise contained in a single protected area, which is a lot of variation for one reserve to hold.

No trail network or visitor facilities are documented here. Access details are worth confirming locally before setting out.

Gandzakar Sanctuary lies in Tavush region, east of Gandzakar village and near Ijevan, in Armenia's northeast. Specific routes and access points are best confirmed locally.

The reserve's broad elevation range means weather and trail conditions can differ sharply between its lowest and highest points — something worth checking locally if visiting outside summer months.
